Of pumpkins and apples

Yesterday we went for one of my favorite family traditions...pumpkin and apple picking! The farm that we visit takes you on a hayride out to the fields, where you can pick your own pumpkins, from baby bears(1-2 pounds) all the way up to 60+ pounds! Our rule has always been you can pick it if you can carry it.....somebody went for a 41 pounder....but she got away with "sharing the pumpkin with mom" :) Some of us have been doing this a little longer and stuck with nice round 10 pounders ;)  We brought two of my cousins with us this year, one who has Down's syndrome and stays with us frequently, and the other that has been living with us for a few weeks now. We also picked some lovely apples....including my favorites, golden delicious :) mmmmmmm........So, in the orchard, we started talking about making apple pie...later, after we'd picked pumpkins, we asked my 3 y.o. brother what he wanted to do with his pumpkin (1.2 pounds :) his answer? "Make apple pie!" I think we've convinced him to make pumpkin pie with it instead....:)
